They have an NPC collection
After an intense fight with a vengeful river god, the party pulled out all the stops on diplomacy and managed to get it to talk to them, revealing that it had once lost control of itself and destroyed its own worshipers, and its current rage was mostly the result of its own shame and grief.
Druid: Kawa, you should come with us. I know a place where you’ll be hidden, and my master can help you learn to control your emotions.
DM: Wait, time out. Are you adopting a god?Druid: I mean, here’s the thing. Siru really feels for Kawa right now. He has a soft spot for broken characters.
Bard: And Krysali’s empathetic to everybody. Did you expect us NOT to adopt the god?
Fighter: When have we ever not tried to adopt an NPC?
DM: Yeah, fair, I should have seen this coming. But it’s a god!
Bard: Well, we’re not just going to leave him alone and sad in a dungeon.
DM: Stop adopting all my villains!
Druid: Stop giving all your villains tragic backstories!
DM: …Okay. Kawa has no reasonable in-character reason NOT to go with you. So sure. I guess there’s a god in your party now.
Fighter: And now we have three NPCs!
